This Week on the Island 09/11/2022

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: September a continuation of August.

Labor Day was this week. In 1935 a large hurricane came thru the Keys and destroyed the Flagler rail line.

Also, Labor Day is when someone said we were supposed to stop wearing white.

I have often wondered what 'Don't wear white after Labor Day' was all about.

1- If I lived in Australia, where Spring is happening this time of year, do I get to wear white?

2- If I live in the tropical zone where it is summer year-round, do I get to wear white?

3- If I live in the North, do I have to put away my white underwear?

4- If I am a businessman in the North do I have to put away my white shirts?

5- Is it just a Northern Woman thing?

6- I must have too much time on my hands to have this silly question of White After Labor Day thing bother me.

Here in the Keys, we have the Bufo frog. It secretes poison onto its skin. The poison will kill your dog if it licks the frog or gets the frog in its mouth.

Dog Beach looking good.

I walk the dogs early in the morning. The sunrise across the Key West Bight. Jimmy Buffett's recording studio, Shrimp Boat Sounds, is to the right. Conch Republic Seafood to the left.

Hurricane Irma came thru the Keys 5 years ago. People came home to find their homes destroyed or not there anymore. Boats were washed up on land or sunk. No water, no electricity. Many roads were washed out or blocked by fallen trees or parts of houses. It was a hot and miserable couple of weeks. Duct tape your frig and freezer closed and move them to the side of the street. The food is rotten after a few days and you will never get the smell out. The Military showed up with water, ice and MRE's. Got to love those guys/ladies in uniform.

The Queen of England died this week. Here she is visiting The Dry Tortugas.

Also today being September 11 (911), I give you a picture of what it looked like before.

We leave you with ‘Easy like Sunday morning’.   Pic from Vance Pacy.
