This Week on the Island 12/04/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Another beautiful week. The snowbirds are returning to their winter nest. Hurricane season was officially over December 1st. ‘Hurricane season has just come and gone, a pretty good reason to sing another song’. ‘Hurricane Blow’ by Michael McCloud.

This week I read ‘Havana Run’ by Les Standiford.

Thanksgiving weekend (4 days) brought lots of families with little kids to the island. This week has been kind of slow.

Statistics show that in its class (15,000 – 75,000 population) Key West has been flagged as the most dangerous place in the state for people on two legs or two wheels. We are also ranked first in our class for motorcycle deaths and injuries. This of course is due to all the tourists that haven’t been on a bike in 30 years and also those idiots riding the scooter with their feet dragging the ground.

There has been some work done at Captain Tony’s around the doors that lead to the pool room and Elvira’s gravestone. It looks like new concrete and a new back wall.

There was also a new door added to the building on the corner of Front and Duval. It used to be First National Bank, and then it was Wachovia, and now it is a t-shirt shop.

Saturday night was the Key West Christmas Parade. Sassi, Boca, Jo and I went and enjoyed ourselves. Where else can you sit on the curb in shorts and t-shirt and watch the Christmas Parade with an adult beverage in hand?

‘Old men and straw hats’. I never liked hats and then I went into the service and had to wear a hat (cover) everywhere. When I got out I went back to no hats. Here in the Keys the sun is more direct (and my hair is a lot thinner) and I learn to wear a hat to keep my head from frying. The hat of choice seems to be the ball cap type. I purchased a brown straw hat and found that it lets the air flow thru while protecting my head from the sun. I have been wearing it in the summer for a few years, in the winter the wind blows so I go back to the ball cap. Now I know why old men wear straw hats.
