This Week on the Island 11/11/2007

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is Power Boats in Key West .

The Weather: It is that time of the year that we all love, 60's at night and the high 70's in the day with little humidity. The A/C is off and the windows are open. We are about to enter the dry season, so there will be little to no rain for the next 6 months. It is a beautiful time of the year here.

The book this week was ' Hurricane Punch' by Tim Dorsey. Another murder mystery, this time in Tampa.

Key West had elections a few weeks ago, but there were runoff's this week. Our current Mayor, that beat Jimmy Weekly last time, beat him again. Jimmy had been in Key West politics for about 20 years and was campaning that if given another chance he could fix the problems of the city. He lost.

This week was 'Off Shore Power Boar Racing' (NASCAR at sea). About 75 large powerful boats racing around in a circle between Mallory Square and Sunset Key. These guys seem to have lots of money and don't mind spending it. The service people are very happy with the tips. Pictures at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland/ click PHOTO then click POWER BOATS.

The boats are something to see. There is the single hull, the double hull and the triple hull boats. Some are almost 50 feet long and others are smaller. Some are from Florida, but most are from large corporations (Budweiser, Geico, etc) and foreign countries (France). Each boat races against others in their class.

Like NASCAR they seem to like to sit around in the pits and race their engines all day. It gets very noisy and smells of gasoline.
