This Week on the Island 05/27/2012
This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
'-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weather: Hot, humid, and sunny, but still cooler than many places in the middle of the country. Lots of blue skies and white clouds. Hurricane season starts next week.
This week I read ‘Bad Chili’ by Joe R. Lansdale.
We are sort of between times. The snowbirds have all gone back home and school is not out until next week, so It has been a little slow this week. It will be packed this weekend because of Memorial Day 3 day weekend. A lot of activity will be at Schooner this Sunday for the minimal regatta.
Minimal Regatta is where teams build boats to race around a course set up in the Key West Bight. Each team purchases one sheet of plywood, one container of fasteners (screws), two 2x4’s, and one roll of duct tape. No caulking but you can paint.
The eliminations start as soon as the last tour boat leaves the harbor for the noon trip to the reef. It all ends about sundown (8:30 PM). Some boats sink as soon as they are put in the water, and some sink during the race. Four boats race at a time. The winner of each elimination round is entered into the finals. Each winner of the finals is entered into the final-finals. This continues until there is one winner. Lots of prizes for: Best paint job, fastest sinker, Best crew, etc, etc.
