This Week on the Island 05/09/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Clear Waters’. With the BP oil spill and the good chance that it is going to get caught in the loop current and come here, I thought I should get some pictures before it is all gone. The first picture is the Atlantic Ocean water at the end of the White Street Pier and the second picture is the Atlantic Ocean water at Smathers Beach at the end of A-1-A.
Weather: Summer is here. Last Sunday night the low was 80 degrees and the high Monday was 85. It doesn’t cool off a lot here at night. The humidity is rising and the A/C is on.
No book this week.
I hope you have a wonderful Mothers Day.
We don’t have a lot of choice when it comes to shopping. No Wal-Mart, no Target, no Sam’s, but we do have a Kmart, Sears, and now a Dollar Store. I love it. I leave with a large bag of stuff that I never knew I needed. $1- Oatmeal cookies, $1 - trail mix, $1 – cell phone carrier, $1 – gas treatment, etc. Life is good.
Sam, my next door neighbor died on Good Friday a year ago. His daughters sold his house and the new owners hired a bunch of construction guys. They have been working on it every since. I really enjoy sitting on the porch and enjoying the scenery and the weather in the winter and early spring. Well not this year, it has been power tools, hammers, cursing, loud radios, vehicles in the no parking zone, and all in all not very pleasant. It has gone on for months and months and months. Soon it will all be over, but the heat and the humidity will keep me from my front porch. Oh well, maybe next year.
The city is still doing work on the drainage system. Eaton Street has been blocked in the daytime for a couple of weeks and that forces traffic down Caroline Street. Tuesday they blocked Caroline Street. It makes driving around in this little town very interesting.
Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) was this week. The Mexicans defeated the French Army in 1862. For more info go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland/ , click FILES, then read about Cinco de Mayo. (You must join this group to read the files.) As usually, there were parties all over town and Jo and I went to Schooner’s party.
I will be 66 this month, so I had my annual check up at the VA. I am in great shape: I am 6 foot and weigh 185 pounds with my total cholesterol at 145, by blood pressure at 110/70 and my heart rate at 65. My PSA (man tests for prostrate) was at 0.4 (that’s zero point four) (should be between 0 and 4). Life is good.
The BP oil spill is headed this way. More on that later.
