This Week on the Island 12/11/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: Beautiful

This week started (Sunday) and ended (Saturday) with the Southernmost Parrot Head Club (Jimmy Buffett fan club) helping the MARC House (Monroe County Association for Retarded Citizens) sell Christmas trees. We do this every year. It is an interesting job to sell Christmas trees in shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and 80 degree weather.

Willie T's, across from Margaritaville has been remolded. It looks nice.

I had the opportunity to meet with a nice couple from North Carolina. They were Parrot Heads and spent some time with the girls (Wyleigh and Sassi) and I in the Dog Bar at Schooner Wharf.

Fantasy Fest was Wednesday thru Saturday with the parade on Sat night.
Wednesday: Pet Masquerade Parade (at the Casa Marina), Celebrity look alike (at La Concha), Headdress Ball (at Aqua) and Bikini Party (at Hogs Breath)
Thursday: Nightmares in Dreamland (Atlantic Shores), Pretenders in Paradise (Pier House), Freaks & Geeks (Aqua), Party in Plaid (Capt Tony's), Dungeons & Dragons (801 Bourbon), Toga Party (Sloppy Joe's), Monster' Ball (Green Parrot)

This weeks book was 'A Key West Concoction' by Alyson Matley and Kevin Crean. Very interesting. I learned a lot.

Parrot Fish eat rocks, breath water, change gender, and make their own pajamas. These colorful fish are named for their unusual parrot shaped mouth. The fish graze on coral for the delicate coral polyps. The Parrot fish creates one ton of coral sand for each acre of coral every year. At night it takes the Parrot fish about 1/2 hour to create a protective bubble to sleep in. This fish can also undergo a sex change if needed. If the male Parrot fish of the harem dies, the dominate female will change into a male. The Parrot fish can also change colors depending on the different stages of it's growth or it's gender, or it's environment. So the next time you are walking on a beautiful white beach, you can thank the coral eating Parrot fish. For more on Parrot Fish visit http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/p1/parrotfi.asp
