This Week on the Island 02/21/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Dolphins Surfing’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1251711/Every-dolphins-gone-surfin-Stunning-pictures-hundreds-glide-monster-waves.html Thanks to Danielle Ferraro.

Weather: It continues to be colder than we like it, but the tourists seem to think it is wonderful. We expect it to get back to the 70’s by this week end. I have two pair of jeans that I have been living in for the last 7 weeks (yes, I do wash them occasionally), but I am still wearing my sandals.

The book this week was ‘Tales of Fantasy’ (1938) by Charles Knapp. Another one of the books that was found in the cleanup of the storage room.

The city is packed. Lots of people everywhere. The locals are the ones in jeans and coats. The tourists are in shorts and t-shirts.

Last summer I mentioned and sent pictures of the rebuilding of eastern end of Mallory Square. It was completed in October 2009 and now they have almost completed the west end rebuild and are in the process of adding the last of the brick in place. It will look just like it did before all this construction, but will be much stronger.

The new mayor of Key West has decided that $18 million is too much to spend for a new city hall. It looks like city hall will be moved to one of the unused local school buildings. I think it is a good move on the cities part.

The Schooner Wolf is loaded with supplies will be leaving soon for Haiti. It joins other schooners that have already departed.

There was a 3 car pile-up on the 7-mile bridge Thursday at 4:00 PM. The road did not reopen for 4 ½ hours. Another reason to try and drive safely when coming down US#1.

Pirate Soul Museum on Front Street is closing and moving to St. Augustine, Fl. Pat Croce said it is a more family oriented city.
