This Week on the Island 03/11/2012
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weather: A cold front moved across the island last Sunday and it stayed cool and windy thru Tuesday. Nice again by the weekend.
This week I read ‘Pineapple Grenade’ by Tim Dorsey. Another adventure of Serge as he goes around Florida killing people that ‘need to be killed’. A bit like Dexter on TV.
Spring Breakers on Smathers Beach. Picture from the Key West Citizen newspaper. The college kids are everywhere. They really know how to trash a place. They are loud and young and stupid, but I love it. Things have not changed much since I went on Spring Break.
The Schooner Western Union, docked next to Schooner Wharf Bar, is the flagship of Key West. This week it was made the flagship of the state of Florida. (The Schooner Wolf is the flagship of the Conch Republic.)
The old house on the corner of Caroline and Elizabeth finally gets a coat of paint.
It is bike week in Daytona, so we have lots of bikes in Key West.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Mike and Cindy were in town a week ago but had to go back to Pennsylvania. Joe and Sharron just left to head home to Wisconsin. It is good to have friends.
-------------------Sailing Terms--------------------------
I always thought that 'Three Sheets in the Wind' (a term used to mean pretty damn drunk) refered to your sails on the ship not being tied down properly, therefore your ship was out of control. I had a sailor recently tell me that in sailing terms a sheet is a rope. So if three of your ropes are not tied down properly your ship is out of control. I think I am confused.
Key West, You have got to love it
