This Week on the Island 11/28/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is the ‘Southernmost Rusty Bike’. This bike is chained next to Conch Republic Seafood and was pulled from the ocean all encrusted with barnacles. We are the southernmost city in the USA; we have the Southernmost Point in the USA. We also have the southernmost house, the southernmost beach, the southernmost whatever, so why not the southernmost rusty bike.
Weather: Another wonderful week. In the low 80’s with lots of sunshine.
The book this week was ‘Motor Mouth’ by Janet Evanovich. Sharon and Joe were here last week and she gave me the book. I really enjoyed this one.
Dippin Dots on Green Street closed a few months back and now the place is a cigar factory.
The white eight foot tall plywood construction fence across from me on Caroline Street was taken down Monday. The rest of it over by Schooner came down as the week progressed. Sassi and Boca enjoy the vacant lot and lots of new smells.
Thanksgiving week in Key West. All of the restaurants had Thanksgiving specials, but we as usual went out to our friend’s house on Sugarloaf Key. Walt had invited lots of folks and it is kind of like a family reunion with everyone bringing something. I ate way too much and really had a good time.
Gregg, a friend for many years, was in town this week so we spent some time bicycle riding around the island. We also had a few adult beverages and visited some of Key West’s establishments.
Next week is ‘Pirate Fest’.
