This Week on the Island 09/05/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘The Bat Tower on Sugarloaf Key (Google it), a rainbow over Schooner Wharf, and manatee playing in the bight by Schooner.’

Weather: September and Hurricane Season. Hurricanes Daniel, Earl and Fiona, are gone But Gaston is coming this way. The weather here is beautiful. The temperature is in the high 80’s and sunny.

This week’s book was ‘Hell’s Bay’ by James W. Hall.

Dogs in bars. Pepe’s has started allowing dogs back in. Schooner NOT yet.

September is our slowest month. School is back and the hurricanes are coming so tourists don’t come down to visit. Many businesses’s close and let their people go on vacation.

A friend from the Tampa area came down to visit for the Labor Day weekend. He arrived on Wednesday afternoon in time to listen to some Michael McCloud and then go to Alonzo’s for ½ priced appetizers. He likes No Name Pub so Thursday we went there for pizza and also stopped at few other places (Looi Key, Mango Mamma’s, Geiger Key, and then Hurricane Hole) on our way back to Key West. Friday, he and I went kayaking on Cow Key Channel which is between Key West and Stock Island. After a good workout and fighting the outgoing tide we had lunch at Hurricane Hole.

John Travolta was in town this week. He went to Kelly McGillis for a bite to eat.

Jo went back to the Doctor and they confirmed the infection on her neck was MRSA, but the drugs are doing a good job and she is healing nicely.

The School Superintendents wife that stole over $400,000 from the school system was sentenced to 8 years in prison, 22 years probation, and must pay the money back.

The argument on replacing the coconut palms on North Roosevelt with Sable (also known as cabbage or Palmetto) palms has been defeated.

The Navy gave the city the Truman waterfront about 10 years ago. The city has set up yet another group to give us some idea as what to do with it. Most people here want a park with green space.
