This Week on the Island 11/12/2006
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Weather: Clear and beautiful, in the low 80's in the day and the high 60's at night. The A/C is off, the doors and windows are open, and the whole house fan is running.
This week's book was 'Key West Collection' by Dorothy Raymer. A book of stories about Key West in the 50's and 60's.
Off Shore Power Boat Racing.
NASCAR at sea. Large powerful speed boats racing around in circles by Mallory Square. Helicopters overhead in case of an accident. Lots of noise. These people tip well and the wait people are glad to see them in town.
Jabours.
Some of you will remember that a group of people (Caroline Street Partners) purchased the old Jabour's trailer park and wanted to turn it into a condominium complex (Watermark). It was approved by everybody that needed to approve it and then defeated in court because it was too tall (over 2 1/2 stories). Well, they are back. They have purchased the VFW on Elizabeth Street and Century 21 on Caroline Street (across the street from me). They have redesigned the project to fit city code. This time I think they will succeed.
-------------------------------------
I took another trip on the VA bus to the VA Hospital in Miami on Monday for a post surgery follow-up. The good news is they said my knee was doing fine and I should come back in 6 months. I still cannot bend the knee far enough to ride my bicycle but will continue the physical training.
