This Week on the Island 07/02/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Key West: a city of change. The picture this week is of the Southern Cross. There is a long reflection in the water in the middle of the picture that points to the star in the bottom of the cross. There is another long reflection in the water to the left that points to the star in the left side of the cross. Do you see the four stars of the Southern Cross? The Southern Cross is a star formation in the Southern Hemisphere and Key West is as far north as you can go and still see the cross. It is on the Conch Republic Flag. ('When you see the Southern Cross for the first time, you will know why you came this way'. Written by Crosby, Stills and Nash also sung by Jimmy Buffett.)

The Weather: Hot and humid with a chance of rain. The weather forecast stays the same for the next 6 months (except for the occasional hurricane).

Today is our 35th Wedding Anniversary. Happy Anniversary Jo.

I had most of the week to myself. All of our friends from last week have left the island. Jo has been in Delaware all week. It was good to see her Friday night at the airport. Some more friends showed up Saturday and some more on Sunday. Here we go again.

I had to take Wyleigh Dog to the vet for a rabies shot so I stopped to put gas in the Suzuki Samurai. The last time I purchased gas was April 24th (over 2 months ago) and I only put $20 worth in the tank, which didn't fill it up. This time it cost $23 for a full tank. I'm glad I get good gas mileage.

Cowboy's on Duval has move to the old 'Awful Arthur's'. Awful Arthur's is now on Angela. Things change.

Conch Republic Seafood was closed on Monday. They usually close on Mondays in the month of September because we have so few visitors. This may be something they are going to do all summer. I will have to check to see if they are closed next Monday. I am sure they will be open for this week end (July 4th).
