This Week on the Island 04/05/2020
‘This Week on the
Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings
in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
The
Weather: Same as last week and the week
before. And the week before. And the
week before. Next week looks pretty good also.
This week’s
book was:
Finished
it and downloaded another.
Key West
is closed. All bars, restaurants, even the beaches are closed. US#1 at the end
of the 18-mile stretch is closed and people without property here must turn
around and go back north. This is a lot like when the US Border Patrol blocked
US#1 at Last Change Saloon in April 23, 1982 and the Conch Republic was born.
Even the
Key West chickens are practicing Social Distancing.
The city
is using this down town to update some of our streets. This is Duval Street.
The
Green Parrot and a few other bars will ban smoking when they reopen.
April 1,
1886 the Great Key West fire burned lots of the town to the ground. Most houses
had ‘cedar shingles’ for roofs so the fire spread from roof to roof. All
building in old town, Key West now have tin roofs.
Not much
happening.
