This Week on the Island 01/14/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The picture this week is 'Land Shark Larger', a Jimmy Buffett beer. It is produced by Budweiser and taste a little like Corona.
This week I finished 'Age-Proof Your Mind' by Zaldy S. Tan, and started 'Skinny Dip' by Carl Hiaasen.
The Weather: A little windy this week. I wore blue jeans on Wednesday and Thursday. Nice and warm again by the week-end.
I went out in my kayak Sunday for the first time since my knee replacement surgery. It was a beautiful day and everything went well. The 'Crowith Cramer' was in the bight, again. It is a square rigger and I have written it up before.
The cold front that dropped all that snow as it went thru Denver finally got to Key West on Wednesday. The temperature dropped to the high 50's for the low for the day.
Wednesday was another trip on the VA bus to Miami. They pick me up at 5:00 AM and drop me off at 6:00 PM. (a long day). I had my teeth cleaned. I also got to see the comet McNaught in the early morning sky.
The 'Snotty Yatchies' are back in town. The sail boat races start next week. There will be 53 boats racing with 20 different countries represented. The boats range from 24 foot to 60 foot and are divided into classes based upon design and length. We call them the 'Snotty Yatchies' because they act like they are better than the rest of us. They race during the day, and then they go to their big tent covering the city parking lot on Caroline Street for updates, music, and drinks. The tent closes at 9:00 PM so they all head down town. They make lots of noise and spend very little money. More next week.
I had my yearly physical on Friday at the VA. I am in great shape, but have to control my high blood pressure with a pill a day. I guess a guy 62 years old only having to take one pill a day is pretty good.
The Soldier Ride got to Key West at 11:00 AM Saturday morning. They are a bunch of disabled vets riding bikes and specially adapted tricycles.
The Key West Seafood Festival was Saturday at Bayview Park. Lots of good seafood. We took the dogs and walked the 3 miles to the park and home. Jo and I ate lots and the dogs had a great time.
