This Week on the Island 10/16/2016
‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update
to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except
for those parts that are lies.
Weather:
We are having ‘King Tides’ (used to be Super tide, somebody changed the phrase).
Also used to be called ‘harvest tides’ because this is the time of year to
harvest your crops. This is the intersection of Green and Elizabeth.
How
about a tour of Caroline Street? ('There's a woman going crazy on Caroline Street', Jimmy Buffett)
We start on Trumbo Road at the end of Caroline St. (the city seem to be doing some repairs)

The
corner of Grinnell and Caroline is the Ferry Terminal.
And West
Marine.
The
corner of Margret and Caroline is Harpoon Harry’s (sort of a 1950 dinner with a
great breakfast).
Then there
is Pepe’s (they are open even during hurricanes.)
Then the
corner of Williams and Caroline is B.O. 's
And the new exercise place.
And of course
our house is on Caroline
The corner of Simonton and Caroline has the Cypress House (it burned to the ground
during the great fire of 1886, it is now made of Dade County Pine)
And
there is the Federal Building (it is made from local coral)
Next is the
Curry Mansion (Florida’s first millionaire)
On the
corner of Duval and Caroline is the Bull (downstairs) the Whistle (upstairs)
and the Garden of Eden (on the roof – clothing optional)
Then there is the Pirates Well. (The first fresh water found on the island)
This is Kelly’s (remember her from Top Gun with Tom Cruise). This is also the birthplace of Pam Am Airlines.

On the
corner of Whitehead and Caroline is the Presidential Gates
Leading
to Truman’s Little White House on the corner of Front and Caroline.
We leave
you this week with Cuban Cigars (now legal in the U.S.)
Caroline Street, Key West, Florida. It's a kind of interesting street.
Key West
you have got to love it
