This Week on the Island 05/29/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Weather: Summer is here with hot humid days. This should last until the middle of October. We very seldom get above 90 degrees, but the humidity is near 100 percent some days.

Every year on Memorial Day, Schooner Wharf Bar has their 'Minimal Regatta'. Teams of 6 people build a boat. The boat is made from one very thin sheet of plywood, two 2x4's, a pound of screws, and a roll of duct tape. You cannot use any glue or caulking but you can paint your boat. There are prizes for best paint job, most sinkable, winner of the race, most colorful dresses boat Captain, etc.

The Southernmost Parrot Head Club enters every year. The most fun is getting a group together every night for a week and building the boat. There is much drinking of adult beverages, lots of eating, a bunch of talking and someway we actually end up getting a boat built. Last year, our boat The Drunkin Parrot, got 'best paint job'. This year our boat, 'A Slice of Lime' is built for speed. Sunday we go to Schooner Wharf to race. More next week.

I realize that most of you do not think of 'family life' when you think of Key West, but the Key West high school baseball team, 'The Fighting Conchs', won the 'Baseball 3A Championship' for the state of Florida, when they defeated Orlando's Bishop Moore 7 to 0 on Tuesday night. There was a parade down Duval Street on Thursday night.
