This Week on the Island 03/22/2015
‘This
Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends
about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those
parts that are lies.
Weather:
Beautiful. In the low 80’s with lots of sun. Same as last week. Life is good.
This
week I started reading ‘Killing Kelly’ by Heather Graham.
-------------Road
Trip.-----------
We got a
post card that it was time for Boca to visit the Vet in Marathon for his annual
physical so we took a road trip.
Saturday
we loaded up Boca and Koda and headed for Marathon at Mile Marker 50. That’s MM50
for those that live in the Keys. Here we are stopped at Burger King for breakfast before leaving Key West.
We had a
9:30 AM appointment so we got an early start. This is the sun coming up as we
pass the palm trees on North Roosevelt on Key West.
It wasn’t
long before we were passing thru Big Pine Key that is famous for its miniature
deer.
Then we were crossing the
bridge at Bahia Honda (deep bay). Here is a picture of the old railroad bridge
that Flagler built. After the hurricane of 1935 destroyed the railroad. A road
was built to the Keys using the old railroad bed. This bridge had a cage around
it for stability, so they built the road on top of the cage.
Next of course was the 7
mile bridge, with the old bridge beside it. Jo and I drove across those old bridges in 1971 in our 'little red '64 Corvette' on our honeymoon.
Then we reached Marathon
and the Vet’s office.
A few hours and lots of
money later, Boca had had his yearly physical and Koda had her ears checked and
had some medicine to clear up an ear infection. We headed back across the 7
mile bridge to Key West. Note the old bridge on the right.
We went to Schooner to listen
to Michael McCloud and have an adult beverage or 3. This is a picture from our table on the front row. Sorry you can't see Pete because of the pole.
And of course we can’t
leave you without a picture of some more Spring Break College kids. Oh, to be young and stupid again.
Key West
you have got to love it
