This Week on the Island 10/24/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Shrimp Boat Sounds’ Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio on Key West Bight. The second picture is ‘B.O.’s Fish Wagon’ on the corner of Caroline and Williams. Both pictures are for the Parrotheads that will be coming to Key West the first weekend of November. The third picture is ‘Goombay’ on Patronia Street next to Blue Heaven.

Weather: Another wonderful week of mid 80’s in the day and mid 70’s at night. ‘Every nights a Saturday night, every days a perfect 10. When the sun goes down and the moon comes up we get to do it all over again’. Howard Livingston and the MM24 Band - ‘Living on Key West Time’.

Dogs in Bars: Tuesday the ‘Inspector Guy’ came by Schooner Wharf at 1:00 PM to verify that everything was in place to allow the dogs back into the bar. Schooner passed and then had to go get licensed. They started allowing dogs back in Wednesday. Thursday the dogs and I were asked to leave Schooner because the ‘Inspector Guy’ had been back and told Schooner they did not have there license posted. By Thursday at 1:30 PM the license was posted and dogs were allowed back in Schooner again. Friday was another NO DOGS day as Schooner had not had their chairs counted (each bar/restaurant is only allowed so many chairs). Saturday dogs were again allowed back in Schooner.

This week was Goombay (the celebration of our African Heritage) and was held in Bahama Village on Patronia Street (the street by Blue Heaven).

The Iguana on Green Street across from Captain Tony’s has been closed for some time. There were some workers cleaning it out on Thursday morning.

Stone Crab season started this week and they go well with bugs (that is what we call our local lobster).

A couple were kayaking this week near Big Pine Key when a barracuda jumped out of the water and punchered her lung. She had to be taken to the hospital in Miami.

The raptors (hawks, eagles, etc) are migrating thru Key West. The baby chicks are not safe.

We have some friends in this week from Chicago and we took another road trip. We went to No Name Pub (MM30) for lunch, then Loo Key (MM28), then Boondocks (MM27), then Mango Mamas (MM20), then Geiger Key (MM10), then on back to Key West.

Last Sunday the Southernmost Car Club had a show at Sugarloaf Lodge (MM17). It was sunny and in the mid 80’s, we sat under a coconut palm in our chairs and had a wonderful lunch that was provided by the car club. I had ribs and a hamburger, cole slaw and beans, a diet coke and then some cheese cake and brownies. Lots of folks checked out our Hummer H1.

And last but not least I would like to thank the couple from Cincinnati that sent over a couple of adult beverages at Schooner Friday afternoon.

Key West, You have got to love it
