This Week on the Island 06/04/2006
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key West: a city of change. The picture this week is of Doug and Sassi dancing to Michael McCloud's 'Schooner Wharf Bar Dog'.
The Weather: The weather is here. The summer rains have started. It is hot and humid.
This weeks book was 'Key West Conch Tales' by Jeanne Porter. It was a very interesting book with tales of people that have come to Key West. Tennessee Williams, John Dewey, Hemmingway, President Truman, President Kennedy, etc.
Last Sunday was the 'Minimum Regatta' at Schooner Wharf. Each team of 6 people built a boat from one 1/4 inch plywood, two 2x4's, a roll of duck tape and a pound of screws. No calking or glue is allowed, but the boat may be painted. The local Parrot Head Club raced the 'Drunkin Parrot' for the third time. We put fresh paint on it while we drank a few adult beverages. I have been busy doing physical labor this week. I know it is hard to believe that someone in Key West actually does something other than party. Jo and I are still trying to get the house back into shape after the remodeling of the kitchen. It will still be a few weeks before they deliver the counter top but in the mean time we are putting things in the cabinets, etc.
