This Week on the Island 10/19/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘ Patronia and Duval’ Entrance to Goombay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUemUvT4XrY
The Weather: Wonderful. It is still warm in the daytime (in the 80’s) but there is a breeze and cooler temperatures (in the 70’s) at night.

The book this week was ‘I Ran Away To Sea At Fifty’ by Mary Sheridan Fahnestock. It was written before WWII about two brother that sailed around the word and their mother that joined them for part of the trip.

The house next door was for sale 2 ½ years ago for $1,600,000. This year it dropped to $600,000, it is now $350,000. . http://www.behmkesbest.com/ click OUR VIRTUAL TOURS then click 710 CAROLINE. The condo’s being built behind Schooner Wharf went into bankrupted. Lots of people have put down payments on condos under construction around town and have lost their money because it is time for another payment and they do not have money for that payment. But this is happening all over the USA right now. The point being that if you are interesting in buying in Key West, it may be time to start looking.

Some WWII bombs were found underwater in the Keys. The navy is removing them.

Salutes, the restaurant on Higg’s Beach is now under the same management as Blue Heaven in Bahama Village.

This week is Goombay. (Our Bahamian heritage celebration). Next is Fantasy Fest. (Fantasy Fest is a bit like Marti Gras in the nude) I would expect the numbers to be low this year because of the economy. The Parrot Heads (Jimmy Buffett Fans) will be the next week.

We have a game here that was played Monday night at Schooner Wharf Bar. A pen is built with a floor with numbers from 0 – 99 in squares and a chicken is put in the pen. The first number that the chicken does his business on is the winner. It is not real exciting, kind of like watching paint dry or grass grow, but this is Key West.
