This Week on the Island 04/04/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 3 pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘The USS Independence’, http://www.ussindependenceship.org/ which looks more like an imperial battleship from a Star Wars movie than a traditional naval vessel, pulled into Key West Monday as part of its inaugural mission. The second picture is the ‘Amistad Replica’ http://www.amistadamerica.org/ that came into Key West Thursday. The original Amistad had a slave revolt and the slaves were freed in the USA. You may have seen the movie. The third picture is ‘Smirk’ you know him if you have been to the Green Parrot in the last 35 years. He is a portrait painted on the door.

Weather: Another cold front. Lows in the low 60’s, high in the mid 70’s. We had to get out the long pants again.

The book this week was ‘The Animal Stories Book’ (1938) by Charles Knapp.

Happy Easter, I hope you find all the eggs.

Spring Break is over.

Gary and Denise from Philadelphia were in town this week. We sat beside them a couple of days at Schooner (without the dogs) and enjoyed their company.

Gregg and the Colonel from Tampa have been visiting us for a few days. We met Gregg many years ago on the first cruise to Mexico by the Tampa Bay Parrot Head Club. He retired last month and wanted to come to Key West to celebrate.

The Florida Keys Southernmost Car Club had a show and shine at Duval Square on Saturday. The entry fee was an Easter Basket for the Domestic Abuse Shelter, Samuel’s House and the Boys and Girls Club.
