This Week on the Island 10/03/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is "another Key West sunset" looking across the toxic triangle from Trumbo Point Road. The second picture is 'Walgreens' on Duval Street in the old Strand movie theater.

Weather: Wonderful. Tropical storm Nichole dumper a bunch of rain on Miami and over 12 inches on Islamorada. We didn’t get any rain in Key West.

No book this week.

Dogs in bars. No news yet.

There is a new TV series ‘Key West Time’ staring Howard Livingston of the Mile Marker 24 Band. It will air on Thursday November 4th at 9PM. It will be a 13 week series. If you miss the show the series will be at www.KeyWestTime.com . I hope it is better than the 1090’s ‘Key West’ that was developed by the Tourist Board of Key West.

Had coffee at Pepe’s with some guys from Virginia this week. I would also like to thank the person or persons that sent the adult beverage to me Saturday at Schooners at lunch time.

We are in our slow time of the year; it may be a good time to take a bike ride.

We oil the bike chain and head toward Mallory Square. We go left on Caroline and turn right on Elizabeth and go toward Conch Republic Seafood. We turn left on Green at Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop and go toward Sloppy Joes. Passing Sloppy’s and Captain Tony’s we turn right on Fitzpatrick pass Kinko’s sandals and go straight until we hit the water at Mallory Square.

From Mallory we will head toward Fort Zack. We go across the bridge at the Key West Aquarium and onto the Westin Property. Here we ride around the waterfront to The Little White House in Truman Annex and on toward the Truman Waterfront and the USCGC Mohawk and USCGC Ingham floating museums. We follow the road into the Ft. Zack State Park and ride down to the beach. This is one of the prettiest beaches on the island. (Fort Zack was a Union Fort in the Civil War)

Next we head toward The Southernmost Point in the continual USA. We leave Ft Zack and head out the new road that goes thru Bahama Village and past the old WWII munitions dumps on Fort Street. We go pass Blue Heaven on Petronia and come out of Bahama Village by Hemingway’s House. We take a right on Whitehead and go to the Southernmost Point.

Next we will go to Louie’s Back Yard. We leave the Southernmost Point and head up South Street and take a right on Vernon to Dog Beach and Louie’s Back Yard. This is a great place to stop for an adult beverage and a little look at the waters of the Atlantic.

From Louie’s we head toward Higg’s Beach and White Street Pier. We take a right out of Louie’s on Waddell and another right on Williams and a left on Seminole and another right on Reynolds as we ride pass The Casa Marina. We take a left on Atlantic and pass Higgs Beach, Salute’s, and White Street Pier. (Salute’s sells Dos Equis beer)

Let’s go to Smather’s Beach. We leave White Street Pier and go straight up Atlantic until we take a right on Bertha. Next is a left on South Roosevelt (A-1-A) and we ride past Smather’s Beach. If we continue we will end up at the airport so I like to turn around and head across the island.

We turn around and retrace our path on South Roosevelt and take a right on Bertha and continue on until we reach the traffic light at Flagler and Shanna Key Irish Pub. We go across Flagler and on toward North Roosevelt (US#1). Here I like to stop at the Office for Garrison Bight to say hi to my wife, Jo.

We leave Garrison Bight and head down North Roosevelt until we get to Bayview Park. Now we take a right in Eisenhower and go a few blocks to Petronia where we take a left. This leads us to the Key West Graveyard. The graveyard is in the middle of the island and on the highest piece of land (16 feet above sea level) in Key West.

I am ready to go to Schooner Wharf, so we take a right on Frances and go to Eaton. Here we take a left on Eaton another right at the light and onto Grinnell. Grinnell takes us to Caroline and then it is just a matter of a right on William’s and another left on Lazy Way Lane and we are at Schooner. Time for another adult beverage and a little Michael McCloud.

Thanks for taken a bike ride with me. We didn’t go all the way around the island, but we did cover about 6 miles.
