This Week on the Island 03/25/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is my little Suzuki Samurai ready for 'rag top' days.
This week I read 'Key Weirder' by Robert Tacoma. A follow up of his book 'Key Weird'.
The Weather: Wonderful. It has been a 'ragtop' kind of week.
I spent a lot of time painting around the outside of the house this week. (fence, gates, doors, etc).
The Hummer is getting a bad case of scratches and rust. We sent it to the paint shop this week.
The local Parrot Head Club had its' monthly social at B.O.'s Wednesday night. There was a large turnout and a good time was had by all. They had Land Shark Larger for $3 a bottle.
The lease on the Half Shell and Turtle Kraals has been sold. The new owners said they will make very little change.
Saturday was a miniature golf tournament in Bayview Park. The family (Jo, Wyleigh, Sassi, and I) started walking that way but ended up at Schooner Wharf.
Parking meters in Key West are $1.50 an hour. Apparently someplace parking meters only cost pennies because I find pennies around parking meters all the time. It seem that people just throw them on the ground when they find they don't work here. The east bound lane on the 600 block of Green Street has had the parking meters removed. The city has installed a credit card machine in the middle of the block that issues paper parking permits. You are required to walk to this machine, use your credit card to purchase a paper parking permit, and place this paper permit on your dash board. There are paper signs on the poles where the parking meters used to be to inform drivers of this change. The paper signs are being torn off and the drivers that have parked are getting tickets for not having the paper parking permit on their dash board. There are a lot of upset tourist.
Spring Break. So we begin the 4TH week of Spring Break. Spring Break in Key West is from the first week of March thru Easter weekend (April 8th this year). We will only have 6 weeks of Spring Breakers this year. When Easter come the last Sunday of April, we have about 8 weeks of Spring Break. The island is packed. Lots of college kids everywhere.
