This Week on the Island 05/20/2012

This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Lots of rain most every day this week. Boring.

This week I read a bunch of short books my wife got me for my birthday last week. ‘Happy Birthday May 11’ by Natalis Press, Inc, ‘Key West Explained’ by Marsha Muirhead, ‘What’s so Funny About Getting Old’ by Ed Fisher and Jane Thomas Noland, and ‘Jimmy Buffett and Philosophy’ by Erin McKenna and Scott L. Pratt.

Key West is a sitcom (situation comedy) like MASH or Cheers, etc. A good sitcom has a location that encourages a cast of local characters and the ability for other characters to come and go. Each week we all get a good laugh with the transit characters while keeping up with the ongoing lives of the local characters. This is an interesting place to live.

The NAVY has turned over some of its property known as Peary Court to a company that has sold it to a group called White Street Partners. (This is the same group that was going to build a large concrete block hotel behind Schooner before they went under). We had a meeting Wednesday night with our Commissioner Jimmy Weekly. I just don’t want another ‘gated community’ in Key West. Take down the gates and put in some cross streets.

There was an accident Tuesday night where a car lost it on Caroline Street and went thru my neighbors and my fences. He got away and the police are still looking for him.

Boca and Sassi are great ‘urban hunters’. When we go for our walk at 5:30 AM, Sassi finds hot dogs and Boca finds pizza. Friday afternoon, at the entrance to The Chart Room on Front Street, Boca found a styrofoam container full of bar-b-que, another full of chicken and another full of white rice. The puppies ate well Friday night and Saturday.
