This Week on the Island 09/19/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Motorcycles at Sloppy Joes’. The second picture is a bike with a side car and a trailer. It is loaded down with armament and a pilot in the sidecar. If you have been in the service you may recognize some of the weapons. Go to http://www.veterantributebike.org/

Weather: September and Hurricane Season. Hurricanes Daniel, Earl, Fiona, and Gaston are gone. They all went up the eastern seaboard. Now Igor and Julia are headed the same direction while Karl is headed to Mexico. I really feel for the island of Bermuda it has been hit often this year. We have had lots of rain and a few waterspouts this week.

This week I finished ‘Bones of Coral’ by James W. Hall and ‘Stan’ by Stan Gober. Stan runs Stan’s Seafood Restaurant on Marco Island.

Dogs in bars. I apologize; Pepe’s is not letting dogs in yet. I was told by a friend that they would start letting dogs back in on Sept 1, but it was not true. My bad, I will have to check out my friends’ statements from now on.

Last Sunday afternoon about 5:00 PM I heard the Junkanoo Band coming up Caroline Street. It was a funeral for one of our local artist, Sandford Mallory Birdsey. She was 85 and had a studio at 328 Simonton Street. Her ashes were scattered in the Key West Harbor.

This weekend was a Poker Run. Motorcycles start in Miami and have stops along the way to buy cards. The one with the best hand when they get to Key West wins. A lot of money is raised for charities. The town is very noisy. Lots of parties at lots of bars.

Over the weekend the dogs and I walked down Duval Street looking at the motorcycles. These guys were spending lots of money and having a good time. The people that work in the bars/restaurants appreciate them being here. Boca used to be very afraid of all the noise, now he seems to enjoy all the attention. Bike riders like Husky’s.

On September 17, 1787 the final draft of the US Constitution was sent to Congress. Do you have a copy? Have you ever read it?
