This Week on the Island 06/12/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week (click to make larger) was taken at Schooner Wharf and is ‘Elaine and the beer’ the second picture is ‘33rd Anniversary’. Mike and Elaine are in town to celebrate their 33 wedding anniversary. May they have many more.

Weather: 102 degrees in Washington, DC. 97 degrees in Chicago. In Key West it was 85 degrees with a nice sea breeze. I would rather be here. In my hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, they have had 12 days of over 90 degrees.

The book this week was ‘Key Manatee’ by Robert Tacoma. He also wrote ‘Key Weird’, ‘Key Weirder’, and ‘Key Witch’. I also read ‘Hard Eight’ by Janet Evanovich.

Monday, June 6th, was the anniversary of ‘D’ day.

Last Friday, June 4th, was the 12.5 mile swim around Key West. Some people swim the whole way and others swim in teams with each team member only swimming a certain distance.

I went bike riding with Elaine Thursday. She whipped my butt. I was worn out by the time we got home.

There were three goats cleaning the growth from hills back in Bahama Village where the WWII bunkers are located.

This week started ‘Pride Fest’. It used to be ‘Gay Pride Week’. Sunday they unfolded the Gay Pride Flag down Duval Street from Ocean to Ocean.

A little history. Jo and I were married in July 1971 and one of our stops on our road trip in our 1964 red Corvette convertible was Key West. We crossed over the old 7 mile bridge (new one opened in 1982) and the old Bahia Honda Bridge (new one opened in 1972). How many of you can lay claim to that.
