This Week on the Island 03/07/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Art Fest on Lazy Lane and Williams Street behind Schooner’. Mike and Cindy from Pittsburg just happened to be in one of the shots.

Weather: Cold again. Low 50’s at night and mid 60’s in the day with lots of wind.

This week I continued ‘The Book of Adventure’ (1938) by Charles Knapp.

Mike and Cindy from Pittsburg are in town this week. We got together at Schooner for an adult beverage and a little Michael McCloud.

There is a drainage problem at the corner of Caroline and Elizabeth. The city is correcting the problem by rebuilding the drainage system. We are having to put up with a lot of big trucks in front of the house all day long. It will be worth it when it is all done.

Spring Break has started. (Easter can be any Sunday from the first of March to the last of April. It is something like the 1st Sunday after the 3rd full moon of the year.) Easter is the first Sunday of April this year, April 4th. So we will have 5 weeks of Spring Breakers this year. I enjoy the young people trying to act so grown up.

IIo Ferreira was discovered by Jimmy Buffett singing in a Cape Verde restaurant. This week he is recording at Shrimp Boat Sounds (Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio on Lazy Way Lane on the Key West Bight) and playing in Margaritaville.

Thomas Neary, a former Key West Police Officer, is under investigation for stealing electricity from his neighbor. He used a long electric cord.

Gilbert Suarez, the guy that lost his job as Public Works Supervisor for stealing thousands of dollars in quarters from parking meters, has now been arrested by the IRS for operating a tax fraud scheme.

I am reminded of the old saying ‘Keep you friends close and your enemies closer’.

Jimmy Buffett has a team running in the Iditarod this year. He is a 26 year old Jamacian named Newton Marshall. "Another first this year is the entry of the first Jamaican in the Iditarod. Newton Marshall, a 26-year-old resident of St. Anne Parish, completed the Yukon Quest last year as a rookie and has been training with Mackey this winter to get ready for the Iditarod. His team's main sponsor, Margaritaville icon Jimmy Buffett, wished him luck in an e-mail Saturday. "
