This Week on the Island 01/07/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The picture this week is the house built by Asa Tift in 1848. He chose this site on Whitehead Street because it is 14 feet above sea level. Asa made his money in the 'wreaking days' of old Key West. Hemingway purchased the house in 1931. It had been deserted and was in a sad state of repair.
This week's book was 'Heat Islands' by Randy Wayne White. I have now finished all his books. I have started 'Age-Proof Your Mind' by Zaldy S. Tan, I may be a little late on this one.
The Weather: It was in the low 80's on New Years Eve and New Years Day, beautiful all week.
There are NO local channels here. Miami, which is 175 miles north, is considered local. The only TV reception here for us has been cable. We had 'The Dish Network' installed this week. We now get over 350 channels + HBO, SHOWTIME, FLIX, etc for about the same price we were paying for cable without the movie channels.
Saturday was a 'rag top day'. I took the top off the little Suzuki Samurai and loaded up the family (Jo, Wyleigh Dog and Sassi Dog, the two Siberian Husky's) and headed north. We went all the way to MM10 (mile marker 10) and stopped at Geiger Key for lunch and some adult beverages. Then we headed further north to MM30 to Big Pine Key and their shopping center. Jo bought some tropical fish and then we headed back to Key West.
