This Week on the Island 04/22/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is The Key West Junkanoo Band
This week I read 'Animal Farm' and '1984' by George Orwell. I also read Aesop's Fables on line at http://www.classicbookshelf.com/library/

The Weather: A cold front came thru last Sunday with the high Monday only in the mid 70's. Lots of locals wearing long pants and coats. It is now back in the low 80's.
Jo had jury duty this week (She was not picked). The dogs and I walked her to the building on Whitehead Street on Monday morning. That is one of the things that I love about this town. We walk almost anywhere we want to go.
I made another trip to the VA in Miami on Friday. Got up at 4:00 AM and caught the VA bus. Got back home at 6:30 PM and headed to the Kick Off Party at Schooner Wharf. It was a long day.
-------------------------Conch Republic Days----------------------------------
On April 23, 1982, the Federal Government blocked the road (US1) coming into the Keys at the intersection of the Keys and the mainland at Last Chance Saloon. They used the US Boarder Patrol to do it. Key West seceded from the Union, since it was obvious that the US Government considered the Keys to be outside the US. We declared war and immediately surrendered and applied for $1 billion in aid to repair our war torn country. This week we begin the celebration of that formation of the Conch Republic. "We Seceded Where Others Failed'.
Friday - 12:00 noon - raising of the colors at Ft Zack
7:00 PM - The Kick off party at Schooner Wharf (We had a wonderful time and the Junkanoos played) http://www.junkanoos.com/index2.html also there was an unannounced fireworks display at Mallory Square.
