This Week on the Island 07/29/2012
This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weather: Same as last week: There were storms in the desert of North Africa that got lots of dust in the air. It is here this week and the sunsets are beautiful. Highs in the high 80’s, lows in the low 80’s.
This week I read ‘Cold Paradise’ by Stuart Woods.
Mini-Lobster Season was this week. It is 2 day event before the lobster season kicks off. Individuals can dive for there own lobsters. There are lots of rules and many divers don’t bother to read them and some don’t even get license. Many fines are collected and some jail time may be involved.
This lobster (we call them bugs) was pictured in the Key West Citizen newspaper. Ours are normally much smaller and don’t have claws. Pass the melted butter.
--------Sitting on our front porch, Friday, July 27th at 1:15 PM. ------------
It is 85 degrees with a little breeze; I have the porch ceiling fan on. The sky is blue with a few fluffy white clouds. The ferry just docked at the end of Caroline Street.
- Another Conch train is going by playing ‘There’s a woman going crazy on Caroline Street’.
- A cop just rode by on his white horse. He was texting (the cop not the horse).
- A couple that came in on the ferry boat and walked 3 blocks want to call a cab to take them to Duval Street which is 2 blocks away.
- A man and his wife want to know how much further it is to Pepe’s. I live at 706 Caroline and Pepes is at 806 Caroline.
- The bar tender for Captain Tonys just walked by and said hi.
- Another motorcycle with no muffler just went by.
- There is a group of young military guys looking at the Hummer.
- A bunch of tourist on scooters just went by. They are having a great time.
- There goes a guy walking and carrying a spear gun.
- Why are the skinny people walking and riding bicycles while the overweight people are in electric cars?
- There go two guys that look like they live in the gym (lots of muscle). They are holding hands. Where else can they live openly? Another reason to love this town.
- 4 young ladies in bikinis just walked by headed to Dante’s and the pool.
- I love this old rocking chair on this old porch.
- It is 1:45 PM now so I guess I will go do something else.
The city is de-nutting all the coconut trees on city property. This is hurricane season and a coconut flying at 150 MPH can do some damage.
----------------------Other Stuff------------------------
Last year at this time I mentioned that I was fighting some kind of fungus on my right thumb. It sort of looked and acted like athletic foot. I tried lots of stuff, then went to the VA dermatologists and followed their advice for trip after trip after trip to Miami. Finally one of them said they had tried everything, what I needed to do is put petroleum jelly on my thumb every night. It cleared up in about a month.
