This Week on the Island 01/24/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Yacht’s going out to race’ passing Mallory Square.

Weather: A nice warm week. In the mid 70’s with sunny skies and a nice breeze. Nice weather for working on that tan.

The book this week was ‘A Book of Famous Myths and Legends’ (1938) by Charles E. Knapp. Another book found in the cleanup of the storage room.

This week the ‘Snotty Yachties’ are still in town. They have had beautiful weather for their racing. If you go down to Mallory Square in the morning you can watch them as they leave the harbor. It is quite a sight, but most of them are using motors. If you look to the left, where the sunsets this time of year, you can see them racing in the distance.

Joe and Sharon from Wisconsin are in town for a week or two. We met them a few years ago at Schooner Wharf.

Monday, Sassi had to take a trip to the vet in Marathon. She has a spot on her side that was infected where she scratched it.. She is much better now, but looks kind of bad because they shaved that spot.

Thursday morning sitting on the front porch doing my daily Sudoku
http://www.uclick.com/client/zzz/sudoc/ watching all the tourist going by. I wonder why the skinny people ride bikes and the fat people ride electric cars. I wonder why locals ride bike or walk everywhere and tourist seems to need vehicles to go ½ mile. I also wonder why people in vehicles have the need to share their music (loudly) with others. I guess it is the price to pay for living in Key West.

Friday morning sitting on the front porch doing my daily Sudoku, Dr. Marcus came running by. He is in town for a couple of days before going to a medical conference. It is always good to see old friends. He had run around the island. According to Google, his route was 11.4 miles.

Speaking of running. If you are a runner and you come to Key West, you can run from one end of Duval Street to the other end (1 ½ miles) and say you ran across the USA from ocean to ocean. Really it is from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. If that stretches it too much, you can say you ran across Florida from the Gulf to the Atlantic.

Burger King is opening a new “Whopper Bar at South Beach” where you can get beer with your burger.

Taco Bell in Key West has closed. I guess I will not get to try the new Taco Bell diet.

The Zac Brown Band is at Shrimp Boat Sounds (Jimmy Buffett’s Recording studio on Lazy Lane.)
