This Week on the Island 11/29/2009
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is “Thanksgiving at Walts’”.
Weather: Tuesday night and Wednesday it rained like a hurricane. Thursday was a very nice day for Thanksgiving. Thursday night a cold front came thru and the temperature dropped to the low 60’s. Sunday it was back to the low 80’s.
I started reading ‘D. H. Lawrence, Volume Two, and ‘The Complete Short Stories’ by Penguin Books.
Things Tourist should know: If you leave your bicycle unlocked, it will be gone when you come back. If you leave it locked overnight and the next morning it has trash in the basket, a homeless guy has marked it. If you leave the trash in the basket and leave the bike there another night, it will be gone.
No big events on the island this week but lots of people everywhere.
Sunday morning I went to the new take-out place on the street in front of the Fresh Market near Lands End. The Cuban Coffee Queen has a Sunrise Special that consist of ½ Key Wester Sandwich (egg and bacon on a Cuban roll) and a café con leeche. It was really pretty good. They also have a Cuban Mix sandwich that they make with shredded Cuban pork that is a bit different than the other Cuban mix sandwiches on the island.
The tankless water heater I have been very happy with for 2 ½ years has broken. I couldn’t get a plumber to look at it without charging over $100 and then they will have to order parts and then come back and charge me again to install the parts. I ordered the parts online and then fix it myself. Had to replace the heating element and the circuit board.
Thanksgiving was as wonderful as ever. We left Key West and went to Stock Island then on to Boca Chica and the Navy flight training school. Next Big Coppit Key followed by the Saddlebunch Keys and on to Sugarloaf Key. Next thing you know we had driven over 20 miles. We went to Walt’s house out on Sugarloaf Key because he has room for all of us. His house was destroyed in Hurricane Wilma and he rebuilt with the house raised about 10 feet off the ground. Under the house makes for a great place to entertain and not have people in his house.
This weekend the new Mayor of Key West turned on the Christmas lights around the bight.
The USCGC Ingram is now docked at the Truman Waterfront next to the USS Mohawk. http://www.patriotspoint.org/exhibits/fleet/ingham.html
