This Week on the Island 06/07/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Hurricane George (1998)’ and the old House Boat Row that used to be on A-1-A or South Roosevelt. The second picture is ‘Howard Livingston and the MM24 Band’ that gave a free concert in the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center parking lot for ‘Big Brothers and Big Sisters’ sponsored by T.G.I.F.
Weather: June 1st was the start of Hurricane Season and it looks like it is suppose to be an active one. Of course the weather here for the next 6 months is hot and humid with a chance of rain and an occasional hurricane.
The book this week was ‘The Two-Bear Mambo’ by Joe R. Lansdale. This is his 4th book I have read in 4 weeks.
Still no dogs allowed in Schooner. Last Tuesday was suppose to be the second reading of the bill that passed two weeks ago allowing dogs in open air bars. It was delayed because someone decided it needed to be approved by Planning Board. More later.
We took a short road trip with our friends from Chicago. We drove up to No Name Pub to have an adult beverage and lunch. Then we went to Loui Key to have another adult beverage. Next stop was Geiger Key for and adult beverage and then back to Key West where we went to Bobalu’s for an adult beverage and dinner. It was a great day and we all called it a night pretty early.
The city has dug a very deep hole in the middle of Elizabeth Street. They then placed a container in the hole that captures the input water in a large basket to remove debris. The water then flows thru many chambers and out the other end where it goes into the soil as clean water. The whole thing is fed by the street drains on Caroline and Elizabeth Streets.
Remember the shop at 121 Duval that had the Harley parked out front in the door way and all the cycle gear inside. Well, it is no longer here. I hate to see it go. It seems to me that it has always been there.
This week’s video is ‘Conch Republic Days Parade’. Jo and I are the pirates at the beginning of the video. Sassi and Boca are toward the end of the video. The blond pirate lady with the sword is Evelina, the owner of Schooner Wharf Bar.
