This Week on the Island 03/14/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Spring Break’. The second picture is ‘Cubans’, thanks to Chuck who took it. “This showed up @ 7:00 AM on the point at Ft. Zach; a 20 foot boat made of reinforced plastic tarps and some sort of metal foam board. The tarps were hand sewn and then filled with expandable foam. The craft is powered by a two-cylinder, air cooled Deutz diesel. 13 cubanos (12 male, one female) made the 90+ mile trek in three days, braving what was likely 6-8 foot seas.”
Weather: The lows this week were higher than the high’s last week. It was in the 80’s the last few days of the week. I love it. Open the doors and windows and let the fresh air in the house. The birds are here and he flowers are blooming. Speaking of weather: we have had 368 manatees die this year (Jan-Feb-Mar) due to the extreme cold. That is nearly 10% of the total Florida manatee population.
The book this week was ‘The Story Teller’ 1938 by Charles Knapp.
Did you remember to ‘Spring Forward’ for daylight savings time?
Lots of people everywhere. The collage kids are trashing Duval Street every night. Remember how you used to go to the Fair and by Saturday night there was trash on the ground everywhere. That is the way Duval Street looks at about 5:30 AM but it is all cleaned and ready for another day by 8:00 AM.
Poor old Sassi has another ‘hot spot’. She started scratching only one day after she got her flea medicine for the month. Hmmm, maybe her flea medicine is causing her allergies.
Victory Secret had a show at Mallory Square Thursday night.
Another pedestrian killed crossing the street in the middle of the block. Their only defense was ‘The pedestrian has the right-of-way’. I don’t think it matters once you are dead.
Fifteen new historical markers are ready to go up on buildings in April. They list a phone number that when called will give you a tour of the historical sight on your cell phone.
Strange things happen in this town: Tuesday morning at 5:30 AM while walking the dogs we passed a guy with a loaded spear gun walking down Duval Street. During ‘Pirate Days’ we will have people drinking in bars and wearing pirate outfits with swords and muskets and other fighting weapons. In October at Fantasy Fest there will be people walking around in broad daylight with no clothes on. I mean no clothes. They will have their private parts painted. Some of these people are older than I am and I certainly don’t want to look at them.
Last week there was a 2 car crash at MM21 on Cudjoe Key. Seems a 37 year old woman was shaving her private parts while driving. Her ex-husband was holding the steering wheel from the passenger side. "She said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit". Interesting, 37 year old woman, ex-husband, boy friend? No wonder they call this place ‘Key Weird’.
