This Week on the Island 03/01/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Southernmost Snow Shoe Rentals’. The huskies and I dropped by. He has not rented any snowshoes yet.

Weather: Wonderful. In the mid 70’s in the day and mid 60’s at night.

The book this week was ‘Nuclear Jellyfish’ by Tim Dorsey. Serge the serial killer is again on a road trip around Florida. Serge is a lot like the TV show ‘Dexter’. He only kills people that need killing. In some southern states that is justification for murder ‘He needed killing’.

The island is still packed.

Some folks from Pittsburg were in town this week and met the dogs and I at Schooner. Nice folks.

Jo, my wife, likes boiled peanuts. There is a place in Columbia, SC named Cromer’s that sell ‘The worst peanuts in town’. A friend came to Key West last Friday and brought Jo some boiled peanuts from Cromer’s. She was very happy.

This weekend was a boat show on the Truman Annex waterfront. Beautiful sunshine and near 80 degrees.

How about going on a dog walk?

It’s almost 6:00 AM and time to take Sassi and Boca (the huskies) for a morning walk. We go out the front gate and take a right up Caroline. We pass B.O.’s, then PePe’s and Harpoon Harry’s (can’t you smell the breakfast bacon frying?).

We take a left on Margaret at Flagler’s Train Station and go past Mac’s Sea Garden, Turtle Kraal’s, Half Shell Raw Bar, Dante’s and the building that used to be the first Margaritaville.
We take a left on the boardwalk and go past the Fresh Market, Schooner Wharf, down Lazy Lane and Buffett’s recording studio ‘Shrimp Boat Sounds’.

We take a right on Elizabeth and go past Kermit’s Key Lime Shop and on to Conch Republic Seafood, around the corner and past Damn Good Food, A&B Lobster, and Alonzo’s.

We go down Front Street past Fairvilla, Two Friends Restaurant and Island Dog and cross Duval Street. We go out on Mallory Square and check to see if any cruise ships are in the harbor. We walk pass the shops at the Conch Train Station and the dogs get a drink of water from the fountain.
We head up Green Street past Mel Fisher’s Museum, Captain Tony’s, Cowboy’s and turn right on Duval at Sloppy Joes. We pass The Lazy Gecko, Ricks, Dirty Harry’s, The Red Garter, Irish Kevin’s, Big Un’s and Teaser’s, and on to The Bull and Whistle and Garden of Eden.

Now we take a left on Caroline and pass Folgerty’s the Curry Mansion, the Cypress House and then back home. We have been about 1 ½ miles. The dogs have taken care of business and I need my morning coffee.

Thanks for going with us, we enjoyed the company.
