This Week on the Island 11/22/2020
‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
The Weather:
This week I started reading.
Seems like a good week to show old pictures of Key West.
Key West after the fire of 1886. The only fire truck was in New York for repairs.
This is The Galleon, a ship built by Mel Fisher as a museum to display the ‘stuff’ he and his crew were bringing up from the shipwreck.
Mallory Docks before Mallory Square.
The old 7-mile bridge with the swing gate open.
Old North Roosevelt when it had water on both sides.
Tank Island was built by the government when it dredged out the ships channel. It is now Sunset Key.
The island next to Tank Island was called Wisteria because it was built on top of the remains of this ship The Wisteria. Most folks know it as Christmas Tree Island now.
Old Blue Heaven.
Old B.O.’s (Buddy Owens) Fish Wagon when it was on Duval Street.
The Oldest Bar before it was Captain Tony’s.
The building of Victoria’s Restaurant before it was Sloppy Joe’s.
Turtle Kraals before it was rebuilt.
The Charcoal Hut before it was Willy T’s.
