This Week on the Island 08/25/2013

‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Same as last week. Another beautiful Key West week. Lots of sun, some rain lots of humidity. In the low 90’s in the day and the low 80’s at night.
 No book this week.
I have a new PC and had problems last week with email. If you save www.ThisWeekOnTheIsland.blogspot.com as a favorite, bookmark or whatever, you will have this address for the future. New blog each Sunday.
---------Let’s take another walk like we did last week----------------------
We leave the house and go west on Caroline Street. A 96 room hotel is to be built across the street. They will have underground parking. The mountains of dirt are from the hole they are digging to create that underground parking.
We pass the Cypress House. The original house was made of cypress. Termites do not eat cypress. The original house burned in the great fire of 1886 when most of Key West burned to the ground. This house is made of Dade County Pine.
This is the Bull and Whistle and Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden is a clothing optional bar on the top of the building.
This is Coyote Ugly. A new bar on Duval Street. Not one of my favorite, but it gets lots of late night customers.
This is the Ricks/Dirty Harry bar complex. The five bar stools on the sidewalk are the best viewing of happenings across the street at Sloppy Joe’s.

This is Sloppy Joe’s and the place everyone visits that comes to Key West. It is the place that claims to be the Hemingway hangout.

This is Captain Tony’s Saloon and is known as the original Sloppy Joe’s. Sloppy Joe Russell was one of Hemingway’s buddies and this was his bar. They closed it one night and moved everything to the corner of Duval and Green to the current Sloppy Joe’s.
This is the old Key West City Hall and is where many a meeting is held now.
This is Shrimp Boat Sounds, the Jimmy Buffett recording studio on the Key West Bight.

This is Boca saying thank you for taking another walk with us.

Key West you have got to love it
