This Week on the Island 07/10/2011
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Waterspout’. A waterspout is a tornado at sea and the Florida Keys are the waterspout capital of the world. There are about 500 a year and most are in June, July, August and September.
Weather: Summer continues. It is hot and humid and it rains a little most every day.
I finished ‘Crack Down’ by Bernard Cornwell. It is about drugs in the Bahamas. Great action packed read.
On July 4th there was a big party held at the Casa with fireworks at 9:00PM at White Street Pier. There was NO parade downtown. It was kind of quite the rest of the week.
With July 4th over, the next events on the calendar are Mel Fisher Days (July 14 – 17), Hemingway Days (July 19-24), The Battle of the Bars on Lazy Lane (Aug 7), Captain Tony Days (Aug 11 – 14), Key West Lobster Fest (Aug 13), and probably a few I missed.
Joe and Sharon from Wisconsin were in town this week. It is always a pleasure to see them. Sharon is the one that got me to read Janet Evanovich. I thanked her for that. Toward the end of this week I saw Joe at Schooner Wharf and ask why he was still in town. He was supposed to leave the previous day. His flight had been cancelled and he ‘HAD’ to wait until Saturday morning to get another flight. Extra days in paradise, how may have dreamed of that?
Bad Timing: The city of Key West, in their great wisdom, decided that now is the time to put more sand on Smathers Beach. This is hurricane season and turtle nesting season. There are people walking the beach in the early mornings looking for turtle nest and marking them so they don’t get covered with extra sand. There isn’t much we can do about a hurricane removing all the sand.
