This Week on the Island 04/01/2012
This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Another wonderful spring week with clear skies and white clouds. Temperatures were in the low 80’s.
The book this week was ‘Lost Souls of Paradise' by Ritchie Stewart .
Happy April Fool’s Day. April Fools Day is ‘Smirks’ 37th birthday. If you have ever been to the Green Parrot Bar, you know who Smirk is.
Last week we walked around the Key West Bight, this week let’s go on a bike ride to Key West beaches. We are a coral island and our beaches are man made. When you step into the water you are on rock. When the stingray settles to the bottom they cover themselves with sand. If you bump a stingray it will swim away. If you step on a stingray it will get you with its barb on the end of its tail. You should do the stingray shuffle in a sandy bottom ocean. You don’t need to worry about that here.
We head down Caroline Street to Simonton St and take a right. Two blocks ahead is Simonton Beach on the Gulf. We call it bum beach.
We leave Simonton and head to the Florida State Park, Fort Zack. This is one of the prettiest beaches on the island and also has an old fort if you get bored with the beach.
Part of Fort Zack is Truman Beach. A little out of the way spot with nice sand.
We next head across the island to the Atlantic side of Duval Street to South Beach. This little beach is sort of back water but has a nice restaurant.
We leave on Duval and go up South Street and right on Vernon to get to Dog Beach. This is the smallest beach on the island. It is next to Louis Back Yard and is the place to take your dog for a swim.
Now we leave Dog Beach and head around the Casa Marina and over to Higgs Beach. This is the family beach and has the restaurant Salute’s.
Across the White Street pier is Rest Beach which is usually pretty deserted except for the homeless at all the little tables.
Now we have to peddle about a mile to get to Smathers Beach which is near the airport. This is the beach that most of the college kids like to visit.
We have visited all of the Key West beaches and now have a long ride home, but it is a beautiful day, the sun is out, the sky is blue, and everything is good.
Thanks for taking the ride with me.
