This Week on the Island 04/17/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘the 7 Mile Bridge Run.’ Twenty seven year old Daniel Martin from Hialeah, Fl was the first to cross the finish line. His time was 38:59. The run was held last Sunday and there were 1,500 participants. The second and third pictures are ‘Orchids‘ on Fleming Street.

Weather: Wonderful and warm and sunny.

This week I read ‘Plum Lucky’ by Janet Evanovich.

Another week of spring break. Less and less college kids in town as Easter gets nearer.

Our visitors from out of town had a great time. Jo’s friend had been here before, but this time she brought her parents who had never been here. Her father was interested in Fort Zack and Fort Jefferson and everything having to do with Hemingway. He especially wanted to see the six toe cats. We went to Hog Fish Bar and Grill on Stock Island and then to Geiger Key Marina where we saw a bunch if Iguana swimming across the cannel to some mangrove islands.

Boca, the Siberian husky, likes stuffed toys. We had some other friends come to visit over the weekend. Their child stepped in the front door holding a stuffed toy. Boca took it out of her hands and walked away with it. The kid was a little upset and it took both Jo and I to get the toy from him. We went to Conch Republic Seafood on Friday night and it was packed. We found two young blonds sitting at a table and joined them. They were from Denmark and said they liked Key West best of all the American cities they had visited. One looked to be in here teens and the other in her early twenties. They were 37 and 32. We were very surprised.

We went to Schooner on Saturday. Gary and his wife from Pennsylvania were back in town and sitting on the front row. Gary was calling home to talk to friends. It was 45 degrees and raining in Pennsylvania. It was 85 with blue skies and a nice breeze in Key West.

With people in from out of town, we have been doing a lot of eating out. The diet may have to start again next week. I have gained a few pounds.
