This Week on the Island 02/24/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is the building part of Schooner Wharf Bar. (Click to enlarge) The Schooner Wharf Bar is to have the burned wooden building up top removed, but it has all been put on hold until the city can check the structure integrity of the concrete building below. The whole thing may need to be removed.

The Weather: February and beautiful. Highs in the high 70's and low 80's and sunny.

The book this week was 'The Big Bamboo' by Tim Dorsey. Lots of Florida mystery writers write about detectives, but Tim Dorsey write about a serial killer Serge. In this book Serge goes to Hollywood to find why they don't make movies in Florida.

This week was the lunar eclipse on Wednesday night, the shooting-down of a bus size US satellite that was about to fall out of orbit, and let's not forget the safe landing of the space shuttle.

Kelly's on Whitehead and Caroline had a small fire, but should be back in operation soon.

The Fresh Market on the Key West Bight is to be sold to another grocery store chain that also does fresh food.

Ole Island Days was this weekend with a Street Art Fair on Whitehead at Caroline.

The island is packed. I guess people are about fed up with winter.
Matt, one of the members of the Key West Parrot Head Club works at Ambrosia. Jimmy Buffett came in and spent some time there this last Tuesday.
