This Week on the Island 09/04/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: Sunny and hot.

Katrina was a lot worst to Key West than Dennis was a few weeks ago. There was much more damage and the 4th most rain Key West has had in it's history. The eye of Katrina sat 50 miles north of us for over 24 hours beat us up as it changed from a Catagory I to a Catagory 2. Then Katrina moved West of us while it changed from a Catagory 2 to a Catagory 3. It was a long 2 days. I guess Key West had three advantages over New Orleans. We are above sea level, our houses are built for hurricanes, and the reef keeps us from having a tidal surge. So after the storm, the water drained away and everyone cleaned up. Duval Street was back to normal in just a few days. Many people that lived on boats have nowhere to live and some places around town have let friends stay in their storage areas.

The Hawaiian Tropic Swim Suit Contest for last Friday night was been postponed because of Hurricane Katrina. It has not been rescheduled yet.

This weeks book was 'Key West Photo Safari' by Rob O'Neal. Rob takes pictures for 'The Key West Citizen' newspaper. He has a website 'KeyWestPhotoSafrai.com' with many pictures. If you like Key West, you need to visit his site.
