This Week on the Island 09/12/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Meteors over the Keys at sunset’.

Weather: September the height of hurricane Season. Hurricanes Daniel, Earl, Fiona, and Gaston are gone. They all went up the eastern seaboard. Now Igor is headed this way.

This week’s book was ‘Bones of Coral’ by James W. Hall.

Dogs in bars. Nothing new to report. This started March 24, 2010. I know that is only 5 ½ months, but if each of our years is equal to 7 dog years then it has been 38 dog months, That is over 3 years for my dogs.

September is our slowest month, but this week was ‘Women fest Key West’. Lots of ladies holding hands. http://www.fla-keys.com/news/news.cfm?sid=7842

Saturday was the first Lionfish roundup. A Lionfish is an evasive species that has no predators here. They are beautiful but are killing off the local fish.

Saturday after noon a young lady on a paddle board arrived at South Beach on the Atlantic side of Duval. She had paddled from Cuba.

Hope you had a good Labor Day. We lit the butane cooker. Put on a large pot full of water. Threw in some crab boil, little red potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage cut into nickel slices, and some shrimp and made Beauford Stew. It was wonderful.

They could not pave the streets in Key West on Wednesday because it was raining in Miami. Huh? It seems they could not load the tar trucks in Miami because to the heavy rain. It is amazing the things that stop progress here.

We are experiencing extra high tides at the moment and the ocean is coming up the drains and into the streets. The corner of Elizabeth and Green Streets is flooded twice a day.

A friend and I were sitting in the rockers on the front porch when a guy came across the street from the Coffee Plantation and Internet Cafe and started walking back and forth in front of my house talking loudly on his cell phone. I got my cell phone and waited till he was coming at me and walked toward him talking into my open cell phone. I talked very loudly about this guy that was walking back and forth in front of my house talking on his cell phone. He got really pissed and went back across the street. Some day one of my little stunts is going to get me into trouble.

The VA set me up an appointment to go to Miami on Saturday a few weeks ago. They even sent a driver to come and get me and bring me back. I was seen by an orthopedic doctor that examined my knee. She sent her findings to a review board (I had applied for an increase in my percent disability). This week I was informed that my disability was increased from 30% to 50%. This is a good thing.

I hope that Sept 11th found you and yours healthy and well.
