This Week on the Island 04/22/2012
This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Spring comes early here (February) and last and last and last. It is a great time of the year. It is sunny and about 80 degrees, low humidity, lots of blue skies and white clouds and sun. Sunday our paper ‘The Key West Citizen’ predicted ‘Loud Rain’. What does that mean?
This week I read ‘Dead Last’ by James Hall. Great book.
Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band did a free concert at Mallory Square Tuesday evening. Photo from Cindy Plume and taken my Michael Ruetz.
They tried to do another free concert at Turtle Kraals on Saturday night but it was rained out.
The Sailfish contest is being held this week and Mallory Square is occupied by a large tent for the Sailfish headquarters.
The Steel Horse Saloon, across Green Street from Sloppy Joes, has closed. It seems that nothing can make it in that building. That building has been about a half dozen bar/restaurants since we moved here.
The Conch Republic Flag, long may it wave.
We used to kick off Conch Republic Days with Goombay and now it starts with the Island Roots Heritage Festival. In April of 1982 Key West succeeded from the Union and formed the Conch Republic. We immediately surrendered and asked for $1 billion to repair our war torn country. This is the parade in Bahama Village 2011.
The Seven Mile Bridge run was cancelled Saturday morning. Picture from www.7mbrun.com 2011.
The Great Conch Republic Drag Races were rained out but were to be held on the 700-800 blocks of Duval on Saturday. Picture is from 2011.
The only thing that has NOT been rained out so far is the kick-Off party at Schooner Wharf last Friday night.
More next week.
