This Week on the Island 02/12/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week are: (1) Dr. Sweeting's home on Duval Street in the early 1900's and (2) it was replaced by the La Concha Hotel.

The Weather: a little too cool at night but wonderful during the day.

This weeks book was 'Conch Shell Murder' by Dorothy Francis. Another murder mystery that takes place in Key West. This one is about a female detective on her first case. I really like following the detective around town and going out to look for things that I didn't know existed.

Last Sunday being Super Bowl Sunday, Schooner Wharf had a large TV on the band stand and the placed was packed even though it was 58 degrees.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, you had to pay to get into Schooner Wharf. Tom Rush (http://www.tomrush.com/ ) was playing.

Monday was a new adventure. The VA sent me to the VA Hospital in Miami to have my hearing checked. I got to ride the VA bus. Got up at 4:00 AM, caught the bus at 5:00 AM, got to Miami at 9:00 AM, had my appointment at 10:00 AM, got back on the bus at 2:00 PM and arrived back in Key West at 6:00 PM. I guess I can add that to my list of things that I did for the first time.

The Rum Barrel next to Pirate's Cove on Front Street has opened. Ron Jon's in the old Burger King on Front Street is open and the restaurant in Billy's Bar on Front
Street is open under new management. The Bar is still being remodeled and Island Dog on Front Street is still working on opening.

Saturday the local Parrot Head Club helped with the city wide cleanup by bagging garbage on US#1 next to the Garrison Bight.

The hibiscus are blooming. I have red, yellow and pink hibiscus and they are beautiful.

----------And You Think Key West is Weird----------------------------

The Rolling Stones base player, Bill Wyman, at age 47 married 13 year old Mandy Smith with her mothers blessings. Divorced after 1 year. Bill's son Stephen, 30, married Mandy's mother, 46. Thus Steven was a stepfather to his former stepmother. If Bill and Mandy had remained married, Stephen would be his father's father-in-law and his own grandpa.
