This Week on the Island 04/05/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘orchids’. These guys are growing on a tree on Thompson Lane just off Grinnell and across from Finnegan’s Wake.

Weather: Hot and Humid: In the mid to upper 80’s in the day and low 70’s at night. I love it. We have turned the A/C on and put up the grill until it cools off again in November.

The book this week was ‘Why Do We Say It?’ Did you know that ‘Allspice’ is not a mixture of all spices? It is nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon.

This was the 5th week of spring break.

The VA Doctor I have as my personal physician, finally talked me into getting a colonoscopy for my 65th birthday. I haven’t had one in about 20 years. I had it done in February and they did NOT find any problems. Then last month the VA announced that everyone that had the procedure in the last 4 years needed to come in for a blood test for hepatitis and/or HIV. I had the test last week and received the results this week. I am A-OK. I find it interesting that this same equipment is used all over the country and the VA is the only hospital that has let patients know that there may be a problem.

I spent some time on the bicycle this week. I love getting off the main roads and riding around thru some of the neighborhoods.

Boca picked up an old ripped up tennis ball that had been floating in the ocean. He is now covered in sea lice and has given them to Sassi. The family had to make a trip to the vet to purchase ‘comfortis’. It is a pill that gets rid of everything that is eating on your dog.

In April of 1982 Key West seceded from the Union and became the Conch Republic when the US Government used the Border Patrol to block US#1 up in Florida City. We celebrate every year. Now the Northern part of the Key’s wants to secede from the Conch Republic and form their own republic. More Later.
