This Week on the Island 01/09/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘our hibiscus in bloom’, and ‘Jo’s remodeled bike’.

Weather: It has been nice and warm lately and Tuesday morning the sea fog came rolling in about 7:30 AM. It was all gone by 9:30 AM. It has been warm and beautiful all week with a cold front moving thru Friday morning dropping the Temperature to 63 degrees. It was in the mid 70’s again on Saturday.

This week I read ‘High Five’ by Janet Evanovich.

Big Foot has left the island. Some of you may remember Big Foot the cat at the Truman Annex that was kidnapped and taken to Boston. There was a big court case and the cat had to be returned to its owner here in Key West. The Citizen announced the cats passing in Tuesday paper.

The unofficial parking lot across the street from me has started to cause some problems. This was the area they tried to build Harbor House and went bankrupt. The 8 foot tall plywood construction fence was pulled down. The motor homes started setting up on the property and the people were caught stealing ice from the ice machines at Schooner Wharf. The people that run the parking lots in town are upset and not getting any customers. The lot has turned into a trash pile and no one is cleaning it up. I think the city let it go as long as they could and now will be forced to do something to shut down the parking on this property. On Friday the ‘No Trespassing’ signs went up.

Jo had a bicycle that she never used. She had a tricycle that rusted and now she has a bicycle with adult training wheels. They are from Sears and called adult stabilizing wheels.

Over 750 manatees have died since last year. Some of it because of the cold last winter, some of it because of the cold this December, and some of it because of hits by boats.

The old wooden stairs have been removed and the new spiral stairs have been installed to our new concrete back deck.
