This Week on the Island 05/23/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Dogs on the Old City Hall steps’. We went to express our concerns for allowing dogs in bars/restaurants.

Weather: Hot and humid for the next 6 months. The rainy season/hurricane season is just around the corner. Mid 80’s in the day and high 70’s at night.

The book this week was ‘Mucho Mojo’ by Joe R. Lansdale. I enjoyed his book last week so much, ‘Captains Outrageous’ that I checked out a few more from the library.

The Dry Tortugas (Fort Jeff) had tar balls on the beach Tuesday. The ‘scientist’ says it is not from the BP oil well. (Call CSI, lets check the DNA.)

The City Commission voted Tuesday night to let dogs back in open air bars that apply for license. A bunch of us took our dogs and sat on the steps of Old City Hall before the meeting. It must pass a final reading in two weeks and then the bars/restaurants must apply for license. So maybe about another month.

A friend is in town looking for a place to buy in the Keys. We went about 30 miles north to start looking and worked our way back toward Key West. Something livable, outside Key West, cost over $200,000. On a channel cost more. He likes to fish so he would like a channel or at least a boat ramp. Plus he needs enough yard to park a boat. We are still looking.

We enjoyed pizza and beer at ‘No Name’, and adult beverage at Looe Key, and a little rest at Geiger Key. (Looe Key was named after the HMS Looe that went aground there.)

Billy Currington is recording at Jimmy Buffetts Shrimp Boat Sounds on Lazy Lane. Go to http://www.mtv.com/videos/billy-currington/437651/thats-how-country-boys-roll.jhtml#artist=1238100 filmed in Key West.

The owners of Christmas Tree Island (next to Sunset Key) want to develop the island. More later.
