This Week On the Island 03/15/2009
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Spring Breakers on Smathers Beach in Key West’. Picture thanks to http://conchscooter.blogspot.com/ . The police are using horses to patrol the beach. The waters are full of men-of-war. (a type of jelly fish).
Weather: Wonderful. High 70’s in the day and mid 60’s at night. Lots of sun.
The book this week was ‘Why You Say It’ by Webb Garrison. Do you know the origination of ‘J-Walk’. Colonel Jay, in charge of the Garrison at Washington DC, tried to teach people to cross at the corners.
There was a fire Sunday night, March 8th in the building between Margaritaville and the San Carlos. It reminded many of us of the Fire on April 1886 that started in the San Carlos and burned the entire city to the ground. Key West no longer allows wooden shingles for roofing and requires metal on tin roofing.
The Lionfish, a no native species, has been sighted on the reef off Key Largo.
A local funeral director was busted this week for selling drugs.
A man leading a pig from bar to bar was arrested for dragging the pig thru broken glass and kicking it. The pig died from its injuries and the police found another pig, in bad shape, at his home.
There was a long line outside Sloppy Joe’s Saturday morning. They were waiting for Kenny Chesney.
Howard Livingston of the MM24 Band was Citizen of the Day in Saturdays Key West Citizen Newspaper.
Hope you have a happy St Patrick’s Day.
