This Week on the Island 04/12/2015
‘This
Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends
about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those
parts that are lies.
Weather:
Again, same as last week, and the week
before, and the week before.
This
week I started reading ‘Cuba Straits’ by Randy Wayne White.
Spring
Break is finally over. Only 5 weeks this year.
The only big event that Jo and I
went to was to pick up our t-shirts for next weeks ‘Cow Key Channel Bridge Run’.
We went, with the dogs, to Viva Saloon on the 900 block of Duval on Saturday at
noon. Walked there with the dogs, got t-shirts, had an adult beverage in the patio on the side, walked
home.
The cow
key channel bridge is the bridge you cross just before you get to Key West.
That island is now called Stock Island and is where the people of Key West used
to raise live stock for food, so it was called Cow Key. Since someone already
had a very long (7 Mile) run on a bridge in the Key’s, Key West now has a very
short (Zero K) run on a bridge. We like to be silly, lots of people dress like
cows. The run is next Saturday and is part of ‘The Conch Republic Independence
Day’ celebration which will begin next week.
Heat 1: 1st
Place Contenders (25 seconds is the record to beat.)
- Heat 2: Pets with Humans (and humans with pets)
- Heat 3: Relay Teams
- Heat 4: The Walking Cow Stampede( Main Event)
- Heat 5: Last Place (slowest across while maintaining forward motion)
Jo and I
plan to do the same as we did last year and ride our trikes across the bridge
before the events starts. We will go to Hurricane Hole Marina and sit at the
bar with an adult beverage and wait for the constants to come in after their grueling
run. The bar is the blue building to the left. If you click the pic to make it larger you will see 2 empty seats to the left of the bar. That is where Jo and I will be Saturday at noon. For more info go to http://cowkeybridgerun.com/

Be sure to look for Stock Island Boy (SIB) and Cow Key Girl in their Super Hero capes and uniform.
Key West
